Why Restorative Health?

Nine years ago, I found myself in a place I knew needed to come to but never thought would actually become reality. I was in a residential treatment facility for those struggling with eating disorders, one of which I had suffered silently from since the 7th grade. I stayed there for 3 months, away from friends and family, only allowed one phone call per day. At the beginning I was terrified. I cried in the shower as I bathed my first night there. What was going to happen to me? What were they going to make me do? What were they going to make me eat? Where they going to make me….fat?

A team of medical professionals; a doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a registered dietitian became my team. My vitals were taken multiple times a day, I wasn’t allowed to go to the bathroom alone and I ate my preplanned meals under the supervision of a nurse. Christian teaching came alongside the medical treatment to re engage the foundation of my identity in Jesus and involved chapel, bible study and worship. After three months of intense mental and physical treatment I can truly say I came out on the other side healed. Healed from the controlling thoughts of wanting and NEEDING to be a certain weight. Healed from the striving to achieve a perfection that truly does not exist. Healed from the harmful thoughts and behaviors that dictated what, when and why I ate food.

It was the single most terrifying and liberating experience of my life thus far. And it was this powerfully positive experience that has set my life on its current trajectory. Years and years of life threatening, unhealthy behaviors were changed by the continuum of care given to me at that place and I desperately long to impart the knowledge and wisdom I learned there to those struggling now.

So here I am, having become a licensed registered dietitian myself, advocating that health is about so much more than a number. Health is about balance. That is why I have started this nutritional counseling business, Restorative Health; to preach this concept of balance to the world. Allow me to clarify though, that I am not solely here to teach and inform those struggling with eating disorders. Although that is where this dream started, I desire to educate and inform everyone about balance. We ALL have a relationship with food. And if that relationship brings about anxiety, fear, shame or guilt please contact me. Let me help you transform your relationship with food back to its original, peaceful state.
